  1. Alcoholism is the dependence on alcohol. It 
  2. is characterized as an illness when 
  3. consumption of alcohol interferes with 
  4. normal physical or emotional health. 
  5. Excessive alcohol consumption, whether 
  6. through sustained ingestion or irregular 
  7. drinking bouts or binges, may produce 
  8. physical and psychological addiction and
  9. lead to nutritional and emotional disorders.
  10. Long-term heavy consumption of alcohol leads
  11. to diseases of the heart, liver, and 
  12. peripheral nerves. In Britain, the cost of
  13. treating alcohol-related diseases in is 
  14. estimated as at least £110 million a year.
  15. Alcohol consumption is measured in standard
  16. units. One unit is approximately equal to a
  17. single glass of wine or measure of spirits,
  18. or half a pint of normal-strength beer.
  19. The recommended maximum weekly intake was 21 
  20. units for men and 14 units for women, but
  21. this has recently been increased.
